Divider-Crossing, Wrong-Side Driving Cause 3-Bike Collision, 1 Killed

A series of unfortunate events led to three motorcycles colliding with each other in Bihar, killing one and critically injuring two others. A video of the accident, which took place near Ara in Bhojpur district at 4.40 pm on Friday, shows one of the bikers riding over the divider and attempting to cross traffic on the other side of the four-lane road. The biker moves ahead, not realising that there is another speeding bike approaching him from the wrong side. The other motorcycle, with a rider and a pillion, rams the man's bike with such force that it goes and hits another two-wheeler - whose rider was driving slowly and on the right side. The man who started off the chain of events by crossing the divider can be seen getting up and walking towards the wreckage of the two other bikes - where two other men stand up as well - before turning back. Police said one person has been killed in the accident and two suffered serious injuries. The injured people have been referred to the P...

Astronomers Discover Largest Collection of Missing Link Black Holes in Dwarf Galaxies

चित्र
A significant breakthrough has been reported in the field of astrophysics with the identification of a vast collection of feeding black holes located in the centres of dwarf galaxies . These galaxies, which are smaller and less luminous than larger counterparts, contain varying numbers of stars but limited amounts of gas. The discovery, facilitated by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), has provided researchers with an extensive sample of intermediate-mass black holes, often referred to as the "missing link" in black hole evolution. Findings Published in The Astrophysical Journal According to the study , this marks the largest group of active black holes ever observed in dwarf galaxies. The research team has also identified the most extensive collection of intermediate-mass black holes recorded to date. New Fossils Suggest Land Life Bounced Back Faster Than Expected After End-Permian Mass Extinction

चित्र
Fossil evidence has indicated that land ecosystems rebounded more quickly than previously thought after the end-Permian mass extinction, which occurred approximately 252 million years ago. The extinction event, known as the most severe in Earth's history, led to the loss of over 80% of marine species and 70 percent of terrestrial species. Reports suggest that tropical riparian ecosystems, found along rivers and wetlands, demonstrated resilience by recovering within a shorter timeframe than earlier estimates, which ranged from seven to ten million years. Sediment and Fossil Analysis Supports Findings According to a study published in eLife, sediment and fossil records from the Heshanggou Formation in North China have provided evidence of a faster-than-expected recovery. Researchers examined sedimentary deposits from lakes and rivers, focusing on plant remains, vertebrate fossils, and trace fossils such as burrows and footprints. The research team, led by Dr. Li Tian, Associate R...

How Trump's Pursuit Of Cheap Oil Will Impact India's Energy Security

To fulfil one of his major electoral agendas of providing cheap oil ( 'drill baby drill' ), in his inaugural speech US President Donald Trump argued for increasing the domestic production of crude oil and utilising it to spur prosperity in the US economy. His message of promoting carbon-intensive fossil fuels is detrimental to global decarbonisation initiatives and climate change mitigation measures.  Trump's appeal to US oil producers to extract more oil may have significant implications for the global energy market, including Russia. The US, being the single largest oil-producing country (it produced 19,358 thousand barrels per day in 2023 with a global share of 20.1 per cent ), has substantial power to influence the global oil market. The increase in US oil production could lead to a surge in global energy supplies, potentially driving down prices. However, as a production cartel, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) with a global share of 35...

Bhopal Gas Tragedy: Issue Of Toxic Waste Disposal At Pithampur In Top Court

The disposal of hazardous waste from the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy has come under the Supreme Court's scanner following a petition about the health risk to residents of Pithampur, where it has been shifted. The petition also pointed to the risks to the people of Indore, which is just 30 km away.  Today, a bench of Justices BR Gavai and Augustine George Masih agreed to hear a petition challenging the orders of the Madhya Pradesh High Court that triggered the transfer. The top court has sought responses from the Centre, Madhya Pradesh and its pollution control board. Around 377 tonnes of waste from the now defunct Union Carbide factory was shifted to Pithampur industrial area in Dhar district, 250 km away from Bhopal, recently. The petition said at least four-five villages lie within the one km radius from the disposal site, saying the life and health of the residents are at "extreme risk," the petition alleged. It also pointed out that the Gambhir river flows besides the...

The SGPC statement came after some visuals appeared on social media showing Sikh deportees without turbans while completing their immigration formalities at the Amritsar airport. A US military aircraft carrying 116 illegal Indian immigrants landed at the Amritsar airport late Saturday night, with one deportee claiming they were handcuffed with their legs chained during the journey. The fresh batch of deportees included 65 immigrants from Punjab, 33 from Haryana and eight from Gujarat. SGPC officials, who were deputed for providing 'langar' and bus service for deportees on Saturday night at the airport, provided 'dastar' (turban) to Sikh deportees. "How Can Chief Justice..." Veep's Big Remark On Separation Of Powers

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar today said that the Chief Justice of the country shouldn't be involved in any executive appointment in a democracy like India. "How can in a country like ours or in any democracy, by statutory prescription, the Chief Justice of India participate in the selection of the CBI director? Can there be any legal rationale for it?" Mr Dhankhar wondered. "I can appreciate that the Statutory prescription took shape because the executive of the day has yielded to a judicial verdict. But the time has come to revisit. This surely does not merge with democracy. How can we involve the Chief Justice of India with any executive appointment?" he added. His statement has come at a time when a meeting is to be held for the selection of the next Chief Election Commissioner. The selection would be a first since the Chief Election Commissioner And Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service And Term of Office) Act, 2023, was passe...

Anti-Money Laundering Law Misused Like Dowry Law: Supreme Court

The PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) is being used repeatedly to keep people in jail, the Supreme Court said today. A bench pulling up the Enforcement Directorate, said the law is being "misused like the dowry law". The provisions of PMLA cannot be used to keep someone in jail forever, said the two-judge bench of Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih today, granting bail to Arun Pati Tripathi, a former Excise officer from Chhattisgarh. Tripathi was accused of money laundering in the Chhattisgarh liquor scam case and was arrested in 2023. But despite receiving bail in the current case, he will not be released as he faces another case filed by the Economic Offences Wing. Lately, the Supreme Court has been critical of central agencies, pulling them up for keeping accused, including political leaders, in jail interminably without evidence. Former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had repeatedly spoken on bail and not jail being the norm. While giving bail to AAP...

Rahul Gandhi Summoned By Court For Alleged Remarks Against Indian Army

Congress's Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has been summoned by a court in Lucknow in connection with his alleged derogatory remarks against the Indian Army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra. Mr Gandhi will have to appear before the Lucknow MP MLA court -- a special court that can try cases against MPs and MLAs -- in the last week of March.  Former director of Border Road Organization or BRO Uday Shankar Srivastava had filed the complaint against Mr Gandhi on basis of which the defamation case was registered.  Mr Gandhi had apparently made the remarks on the Indian Army during his Bharat Jodo Yatra in December 2022. The comment that "Chinese soldiers are beating up Indian Army personnel in Arunachal Pradesh" - a dig at the government over Chinese action at the Line of Actual Control -- drew sharp criticism from many quarters and led to a massive political row. Many BJP leaders had declared that Mr Gandhi as anti-national, accused his family of receiving...

Ear Muscles Flex to Help Focus on Sounds, Study Reveals Evolutionary Link

चित्र
A study has found that small muscles in the human ear flex when an individual tries to focus on a particular sound in a noisy environment. These muscles, which were once crucial for movement in ancestral species, no longer play a significant role in modern human hearing. However, their activation suggests an evolutionary remnant of a once-functional auditory system. Researchers believe that understanding these subtle muscular responses could contribute to advancements in hearing aid technology. Research Findings on Ear Muscles According to the study published in Frontiers in Neuroscience , experiments were conducted by Saarland University in Germany to examine the response of auricular muscles during listening tasks. Participants with normal hearing were exposed to overlapping audio sources while their ear muscles were monitored using electrodes. The results indicated that the superior auricular muscles, located above the ears, became more active as the difficulty of distinguishing ...
