Bennu Asteroid Sample Reveals Organic Compounds That May Hint at Life Beyond Earth

चित्र
A sample from asteroid Bennu , delivered to Earth by NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission in 2023, has revealed a collection of molecules and minerals that play a fundamental role in biological processes. Organic compounds such as amino acids, nucleobases, and ammonia, along with minerals formed in saltwater, have been identified. The findings suggest that the necessary conditions for life may have been present in various regions of the early solar system, raising the possibility that life could have developed beyond Earth. Key Findings from the Study According to the study published in Nature and Nature Astronomy, 14 of the 20 amino acids essential for protein formation and all five nucleobases found in DNA and RNA were detected in the Bennu samples. The presence of ammonia and formaldehyde was also noted, both of which are significant in the formation of complex organic molecules. These compounds, previously identified in meteorites, were found in an uncontaminated sample collected dire...

Meghalaya Chief Minister Rules Out Uniform Civil Code Implementation

Uttarakhand has become the first state in the country to implement UCC, but the Chief Minister of another hill state has ruled out a similar step. The implementation of Uniform Civil Code is neither practical nor appropriate, given the country's diverse cultural and tribal communities, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said today. He, however, acknowledged that certain aspects of civil laws could be made uniform while protecting the rights of indigenous communities. Pointing at Uttarakhand, which became the first state to implement the UCC while excluding tribal customs from its purview, Mr Sangma said in a country as diverse as India, a Uniform Civil Code is not viable.  His statement comes amid growing debates on the UCC, with Assam expressing interest in following Uttarakhand's lead in implementing the code. "A Uniform Civil Code, as a concept of making sure that everything becomes uniform, is not possible in India," Mr Sangma said. "There are tribal...

Seismic Data from NASA’s InSight Might Solve the Mystery of Mars’ Dichotomy

चित्र
Recent seismic data from NASA's InSight lander could provide answers to a 50-year-old puzzle concerning Mars' unique structure. The planet is divided into the northern lowlands and southern highlands, separated by significant differences in elevation and crust thickness. This phenomenon, referred to as the "Martian dichotomy," has perplexed scientists for decades. Clues from seismic activity suggest ancient processes within the planet's interior may have caused this division, as opposed to external impacts like asteroid collisions. Insights from Seismic Data According to a study published in Geophysical Research Letters, seismic waves recorded by InSight were analysed to uncover differences between the planet's hemispheres . Situated near the boundary of the dichotomy, the lander captured how seismic waves traveled through the mantle beneath both the northern and southern regions. Researchers observed that seismic energy dissipated more rapidly in the sout...

Need To Fix Accountability For Hindenburg "Hit Job": Mahesh Jethmalani

Senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani has punctured US short seller Hindenburg Research's chief Nate Anderson over his announcement that he would wind up the firm. Mr Anderson said the work took a toll on him as it was "rather intense and at times all-encompassing". Hindenburg targeted the Adani Group in a case that is now seen as an attack on the 'India Story'. "Frankly speaking, I don't know how old Mr Anderson is, but the fact of the matter is that he's not had some sterling results. His claim to fame really rests on the Adani hit job, which he was part of. I don't think he's done other serious work or businesses of note. So, he is essentially a research analyst," Mr Jethmalani told NDTV. One of the reasons for winding up Hindenburg, Mr Anderson said, was it completed the projects it was handling. The announcement comes just days before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration event. There is speculation Hindenburg is disbanding to...

Supermassive Black Hole Flashed Twice in a Rare Event, Scientists Explain the Reason

चित्र
Astronomers recently observed a rare cosmic event where a supermassive black hole, located approximately 408 million light-years away, consumed one star from a binary system while the other narrowly escaped. This unusual phenomenon, known as a double-flash tidal disruption event (TDE), occurred in the galaxy WISEA J122045.05+493304.7. These powerful events, visible from billions of light-years away, typically involve a single flare, but the designated event ASASSN-22ci is notable for producing two flares, sparking interest in its origins and implications for black hole research. A Unique Event Observed According to a study published in the pre-print journal arXiv, ASASSN-22ci was first detected in February 2022, appearing as a typical TDE. However, a second flare was observed 720 days later, making it one of the few documented instances of repeated TDEs. Researchers theorise this might have resulted from a process called Hills capture, where a supermassive black hole disrupts ...

"RTI's Purpose Not To Satisfy Curiosity": Delhi University In PM's Degree Row

University of Delhi on Monday said the purpose of RTI was not to satiate a third party's curiosity as it challenged the central information commission's order over disclosure of information on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degree. 2 Ex-Armymen Killed Woman, 17-Day-Old Twins And Hid For 19 Years; Arrested

Fearing that a paternity test would prove that he was the father of a 24-year-old woman's twin daughters, who were just 17 days old, an Armyman allegedly killed her and the infants with the help of a fellow soldier. The two men then went into hiding - deserting the Army, marrying and having children - and managed to evade the law for a staggering 19 years; until a tip-off proved to be their undoing. The case dates back to February 10, 2006, when 24-year-old Ranjini and her newborn daughters were murdered in their rented house at Yeram near Anchal in Kerala's Kollam district. Ranjini's mother had discovered the bodies upon returning from the panchayat office, where she had gone to get the twins' birth certificates. Investigation revealed that Dibil Kumar B, a native of Anchal who was 28 at the time and served in the Indian Army's 45 AD Regiment in Pathankot, was in a relationship with Ranjini. After the twins were born on January 24, 2006, however, he began distanc...

Bird-Inspired Wing Design Could Boost Performance of Aeroplanes, Claims Study

चित्र
The flight dynamics of birds have inspired researchers to explore innovative enhancements for aeroplane wings. Featherlike flaps, designed to resemble the covert feathers seen on bird wings, have demonstrated the potential to improve lift, reduce drag, and prevent stalls. These advancements, inspired by avian flight mechanisms, aim to enhance the efficiency and safety of aircraft, particularly during challenging manoeuvres such as landings or flights through turbulent conditions. The findings suggest promising applications for both commercial and specialised aviation. Findings from Recent Research According to a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, lightweight flaps mimicking covert feathers were tested on model airplane wings in a wind tunnel. It was observed that these flaps improved airflow around the wings, resulting in a significant increase in lift by up to 45 percent and a reduction in drag by 31 percent. Unlike conventional wing flaps operat...
