Asgard Archaea May Hold the Key to the Origins of Eukaryotic Life, New Study Suggests

चित्र
A group of single-celled organisms known as Asgard archaea has drawn scientific attention for its potential link to the evolution of complex life. These microbes were first identified through gene fragments in deep-sea sediments. They have been recognised as a separate archaeal subgroup. Their discovery has led to significant questions about the classification of life forms. Researchers suggest that eukaryotes, organisms with a nucleus, may have evolved from these microbes. This challenges the long-standing three-domain model of life that separates bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. Findings from Recent Studies According to a study published in Cell, researchers at ETH Zurich have examined the cellular structure of Asgard archaea, particularly Lokiarchaeum ossiferum. The study, led by Professor Martin Pilhofer, highlights the presence of an actin protein called Lokiactin. This protein is similar to actin found in eukaryotic cells and forms filamentous structures, which are believed...

Infiltration Attempts Go Up In J&K, Agencies Crackdown On Overground Workers

A surge in infiltration attempts by heavily armed terrorists along the International Border in Jammu sector has become a major cause of concern for New Delhi, prompting a crackdown on overground workers aiding them. Agencies operating in Jammu and Kashmir say that more than four dozen terrorists have managed to sneak into India and set up their bases in the upper reaches of the Pir Panjal range over the past year. Inputs shared among intelligence agencies suggest that the number of foreign terrorists affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed has gone up by five times compared to local terrorists. Figures from the Ministry of Home Affairs reveal that around 120 terrorists are active in J&K, of which only about 20 are locals and the rest are foreign-trained terrorists who have snuck in. Last month, a heavily armed group of terrorists had opened fire at a Jammu and Kashmir Rifles patrol vehicle in the Sunderbani area of Rajouri district. An investigation has revealed th...

Fossil Evidence Shows Plants Survived the End-Permian Mass Extinction in China

चित्र
Fossils unearthed in China suggest that the End-Permian mass extinction, which wiped out around 80% of life on Earth nearly 252 million years ago, may not have been as catastrophic for plant life. This period, known as the "Great Dying," saw extreme volcanic activity from the Siberian Traps, leading to drastic increases in carbon dioxide levels, severe global warming, and ocean acidification. While marine ecosystems suffered a near-total collapse, new evidence indicates that some terrestrial plant life endured the crisis. A site in present-day northeastern China has revealed fossilized remains of gymnosperm forests and ferns, pointing to a region where vegetation managed to persist despite the mass extinction event. Evidence from Rock Layers in Xinjiang According to a s tudy published in Science Advances, researchers examined rock formations in Xinjiang, China, that date back to the period of the Great Dying. Lead author Wan Yang, a professor of geology and geophysics at ...

Manipur's 5-Day Yaoshang (Holi) Begins, Celebrations Muted This Year Too

Manipur's Meitei community began their five-day celebration of Yaoshang, or Holi as it is known in the state, with the burning of straw huts built at the Shri Govindaji temple complex and a few other areas. Yaoshang is one of the biggest festivals of Manipur's Meitei community. Due to the ethnic hostilities, the festival of colours has been restricted to religious and community sports activities associated with the carnival. A gathering of people marked the occasion in the Mantripukhri area, where festivities kicked off with traditional rituals and music. Due to law and order issues, no amusement and entertainment events, including cultural dances, were not organised by civil society groups. A Meitei priest said besides the ethnic violence, thousands of people displaced from their homes and villages and staying in relief camps since May 2023 are unable to organise festival-related events. Manipur is famous for its varied sports and cultural activities. Holi here is not cele...
